We left the hotel in San Antonio at 7:30 Saturday morning heading toward Mexico. About an hour outside of San Antonio, we encountered a problem....a blown out bus tire!! It was NOT an emergency situation....Paul (bus driver) noticed when it happened and slowly pulled to the shoulder of the highway. The good news was that we had a spare tire.....the bad news was that we did not have a jack! we found a phone number for a local repair shop and they sent us help. While we were stranded on the side of the road we used a nearby field to have an exciting game of Frisbee football and we explored the road side filled with interesting Texas cactus. While we were waiting, a pick-up truck pulled up and asked if we had an air compressor....they had a tire that was loosing air. One of our bus drivers "happened" to have brought along his compressor. They filled up the pick-up tire and told the two young men about our bus problem. It just so "happened" that one of them was a diesel mechanic. They insisted on hanging around until the tow truck arrived to help with the repair. Carlos, the repair man, finally arrived and the three of them jumped into action. They quickly put the spare tire on the bus, but then discovered that one of the air shocks had been damaged by the loose rubber. One of the young men took a wire from his pick-up sound system to make a temporary repair to the shock. We tried to offer the two men who "happened" to stop a gift so they could have lunch on us....but they refused. They said, "you helped us out, so we wanted to help you". We gave them a BIG thank you and we were back on the road.
